Mother launches petition for paid breastfeeding breaks in UK workplaces

A mother of three has started a campaign urging Parliament to grant paid time for breastfeeding or expressing milk at work.

Three-time mother and entrepreneur Ms Bews founded the Don’t Make Me Choose campaign after being excluded from a training event due to her need to care for a breastfed infant. She says the lack of statutory paid breaks forces many parents to abandon breastfeeding, lose income, or leave jobs. The petition calls for legislation that guarantees paid time and facilities for feeding or expressing milk at work.

If it gathers more than 10,000 signatures, the government must reply; over 100,000 would compel a debate in Parliament. Bews has reported hearing stories of women expressing milk in toilets, weaning early, and turning down career opportunities because of one outlet system. The UK Government has been contacted for comment.

Why it matters

Paid breastfeeding breaks could improve health, gender equality, and workforce participation for parents.
