Mother of 2018 SH1 Crash Victim Demands Accountability Amid Ongoing Safety Concerns
Helen Pattinson says the death of her daughter Kellyanne Cindal Pattinson in a 2018 SH1 crash remains unanswered and calls for those responsible to be held to account.
Kellyanne Cindal Pattinson was killed in early 2018 when a northbound food-delivery truck veered across three lanes of State Highway 1 and collided with her car, leaving her no chance to brake or swerve. The coroner concluded there was no evidence of driver error and urged a safety improvement project that would add median barriers and other treatments along the crash-prone stretch. Police, represented by Inspector Vicki Walker, defended a seven-month investigation that found no criminal liability and explained procedural reasons for leaving the body in the vehicle.
NZTA admitted that prior concerns about the nearby intersection and lane surface were not fully addressed before the fatal crash and that funding limitations have delayed the recommended safety works. Helen Pattinson, the victim’s mother, says the family received inconsistent police contact, no charges were laid, and the full story remains hidden, prompting her to demand accountability from the authorities.
