Mother of Henry Nowak's killer to be released early under UK scheme
Kiran Kaur, who was jailed for handling the weapon used to kill student Henry Nowak, is set to be freed under the government's early release programme after serving less than half of her three-year term.
Kiran Kaur was sentenced to three years for disposing of the gun used in the December killing of Southampton University student Henry Nowak. Under the newly-started early release scheme, she is expected to be released after serving under half of her term, roughly coinciding with the murder's first anniversary. Both Kaur and her son, Vickrum Digwa, maintained not-guilty pleas; Digwa was convicted of murder and given a life sentence with a 21-year minimum.
Kaur will appear before the Court of Appeal in early November, while Digwa will also contest the length of his sentence, and the Attorney General is urging a harsher term. The programme, designed to reduce overcrowding in England and Wales prisons, excludes rapists and serious child sex offenders and has already released hundreds of inmates, drawing ire from victims' families. As an Indian national, Kaur could also face deportation, though no decision has been made.
Why it matters
The case highlights controversy over the UK's early release policy and its impact on victims' families.
