Mother of slain Malaga youth urges state accountability in open letter

Laura, mother of 20-year-old Nacho killed in a daylight shooting in Malaga, has written a public letter demanding accountability from the perpetrators and all state authorities.

A month after 20-year-old Nacho was fatally shot in broad daylight on a Malaga street, his mother Laura released a letter calling for comprehensive state responsibility. The assailants, who believed Nacho was a rival gang member, fired on him despite his bag containing only job applications and an adrenaline pen for his severe food allergy; he later died in hospital after crawling to a supermarket entrance. The alleged shooters are currently held in pre-trial detention, and Laura seeks answers about why one with a prior attempted-murder arrest was not imprisoned.

She rejects xenophobic narratives, ties the murder to the city’s surge in holiday flats that facilitate cartel hideouts, and urges stricter drug-trafficking measures, responsible speculation, and restraint from sensationalist media. Laura also praises the National Police, emergency responders and local volunteers for their swift assistance and calls for peaceful coexistence in Malaga.

Why it matters

The case highlights how urban tourism growth and lax regulation may enable violent crime, prompting calls for policy reform.
