Mother of Two Hospitalized with Life-Ending Brain Injury After Dublin Rickshaw Accident
A 37-year-old mother of two suffered a catastrophic brain injury when the rickshaw she was riding overturned on North Wall Quay after a Westlife concert, and is now in ICU on a ventilator.
Danielle O'Keane, a 37-year-old mother of two from Newry, Co. Armagh, was injured in a rickshaw accident on North Wall Quay in Dublin shortly after leaving the Westlife concert at the 3Arena. The vehicle struck a curb and overturned, inflicting a catastrophic brain injury that required immediate hospitalization at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where she now remains in intensive care on a ventilator. Her brother-in-law Derek told that doctors have informed the family the injury is life-ending and are awaiting a brain-stem test to determine whether life support will be withdrawn.
The family, who were planning a holiday in Mallorca, set up a GoFundMe page that has so far collected more than £40,000 to aid them. Garda forensic investigators examined the crash scene, and police have appealed for witnesses and any CCTV footage from the area. The incident highlights concerns about rickshaw safety and the impact on the young family.
