Mother sentenced to six years for burning infant with hairdryer
Court sentenced Courtney Gartshore to six years after she was found guilty of causing the death of her three-month-old daughter by using a hairdryer on the child.
In a case that shocked the Scottish community, Courtney Gartshore, 28, received a six-year prison sentence after being found guilty of culpable homicide for the death of her three-month-old daughter, Dahlia-Rose. Prosecutors presented evidence that Gartshore subjected the infant to intense, sustained heat from a hairdryer, causing burns to 18% of her body, including the head. The trial, held at the High Court in Aberdeen, concluded with a jury returning a guilty verdict in just over an hour, despite the defence’s claim that the baby might have been dead before the burns.
Judge Simon Collins KC described the incident as uniquely disturbing and emphasized that Gartshore will live with the knowledge of her responsibility. The court heard that the mother had consumed alcohol and that DNA from the child was found on the hairdryer. Det Insp James Callander stressed the need to protect vulnerable children and ensure justice is served.
