Mother welcomes Fatal Accident Inquiry after neighbour kills son while on bail
Amanda Greer has welcomed a Fatal Accident Inquiry into the killing of her son Daniel Greer by neighbour Nicholas Henry, who was out on bail at the time.
On a day in 2020, Nicholas Henry struck Daniel Greer with a shovel and stabbed him nine times in Greer's front garden in Airdrie, then hid the body inside Greer's home where the victim's father found it two days later. Henry, who had a prior 12-year sentence for a violent attack that nearly severed a victim's hand, was out on bail for a separate violent incident when he committed the murder and was subsequently sentenced to a minimum of 21 years in prison, dying there at age 49.
Amanda Greer, Daniel's mother, has welcomed a Fatal Accident Inquiry into the death, hoping it will reveal how a known violent offender was released repeatedly and improve protections for other families. She criticised reliance on electronic tags, infrequent social-worker checks, and prison overcrowding as insufficient safeguards. The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service confirmed that the Lord Advocate ordered the discretionary inquiry to examine the circumstances of Greer's death in the public interest.
Why it matters
The inquiry could expose systemic failures that let a violent offender commit murder while on bail.
