Mount Rinjani Remains at Alert Level II After 11 Years, Officials Warn Hikers
Volcano authorities say Mount Rinjani has stayed on alert level II since 2015 and urge hikers to keep a safe distance from the crater.
The PGMBG announced that the volcanic activity at Mount Rinjani, a 3,726-meter peak on Lombok Island, has remained at alert level II since 2015, marking roughly 11 years of the same status. Agency head Juliana Runambi emphasized a 1.5-kilometre safety perimeter around the crater, centered on Mount Barujari, and urged both hikers and nearby residents to heed the warning. She also called for strict adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures set by the Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) Agency.
The volcano, a major draw for domestic and international tourists, has a history of eruptions and solfatara activity dating back to one outlet century. Starting September 1, 2026, limited hiking tours were allowed to mitigate fire hazards during the dry season, while the eRinjani online booking platform remains temporarily suspended. Officials stress that compliance with hazard advice is essential for safety in the area.
