Mountain chickadees rely on sharp memory to survive harsh Sierra winters

Researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno have documented how mountain chickadees use exceptional spatial memory to locate thousands of hidden seeds and boost their survival in snowy Sierra Nevada conditions.

At Sagehen Creek Field Station in the Sierra Nevada, a UNR research group has been studying mountain chickadees for more than two decades, using automated feeders that open only for individually banded birds. By tracking how quickly each bird learns which feeder provides food, the scientists assess spatial memory and cognitive flexibility, finding that the smartest individuals survive up to a decade, while two-thirds of first-year birds perish.

Genetic analysis explains roughly 80% of the memory differences, and a recent study of droppings from 41 birds suggests that gut bacteria producing short-chain fatty acids may boost memory performance. The team plans to monitor microbiome stability over time and to examine how memory affects reproductive strategies, noting that smarter males attract extra-pair mates. Their findings, published in journals such as Science, eLife, and Proceedings of the Royal Society B, could inform broader research on brain-gut links and age-related cognitive decline.
