MP accuses government of bypassing locals over asylum seeker housing in Leicestershire

Five asylum seekers were placed in a house in Fleckney, Leicestershire, prompting Conservative MP Alberto Costa to claim he was not consulted and to write to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.

As part of a plan to end the use of migrant hotels, the government placed five male asylum seekers in a house in Fleckney, Leicestershire. Conservative MP Alberto Costa argued that the village does not have the necessary services and that the decision was taken without consulting him, other representatives, or local residents. He has written to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to raise his concerns.

The accommodation is sourced and managed by Serco, which coordinates with local councils and the Ministry of Defence to locate asylum seekers in former military sites such as MOD Bicester, MOD Barnham and MOD Linton-On-Ouse. Harborough District Council said stakeholders were kept informed, while safety and wellbeing are primarily Serco's responsibility. Similar proposals have faced opposition elsewhere, including a symbolic independence vote in Piddington, Oxfordshire, and previous plans in Kibworth that were dropped after local protest.
