MP Tuan Ibrahim urges removal of RM15,000 savings rule for Hajj pilgrims
Kubang Kerian MP Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man called for Lembaga Tabung Haji to drop the RM15,000 minimum savings requirement for prospective Hajj pilgrims during the 2027 budget debate.
In a parliamentary session discussing the 2027 Budget, Kubang Kerian MP Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man urged Lembaga Tabung Haji to eliminate its RM15,000 minimum savings condition for those applying for Hajj slots. He explained that the rule forces a married couple to set aside RM30,000 in an untouchable account until they perform the pilgrimage, which he said is a heavy load for residents of rural areas. Ibrahim highlighted that the requirement was introduced on Jan 29 to ensure pilgrims could afford the journey, but he challenged its fairness and the lack of clarity on whether the funds are treated as savings or investment. He called on the government to find an alternative approach that does not hinder prospective pilgrims from fulfilling their religious duty.
Why it matters
The proposal could affect thousands of Malaysian Muslims planning the Hajj by reducing a costly financial barrier.
