MP urges legal safeguards for constituency funding and anti-defection rules
MP Kiandee called for law-mandated equal constituency funding, easier no-confidence motions and reforms to the anti-hopping law during the 2027 budget debate.
In a budget debate, MP Kiandee urged the passage of legislation that would lock in equal constituency allocations for all members of parliament, ensuring opposition legislators receive the same funding as their government counterparts. He cited Barisan Nasional’s inability to enact such protections after losing power in 2018, which left its MPs without allocations. Kiandee further demanded reforms to parliamentary rules so that no-confidence motions cannot be sidelined.
Regarding the anti-hopping law, he claimed it has failed to curb party switching while penalising MPs like himself who were suspended by their parties. He appealed to one outlet government to act now, warning that future opposition members could face the same funding shortfalls and restrictions if power changes hands.
Why it matters
The proposals could reshape Malaysia's parliamentary funding and party-switching rules, affecting future opposition effectiveness.
