MPs demand scrutiny of aging helicopter fleet after Sarawak crash kills five
Two MPs raised safety concerns about the Flying Doctor Service after a helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Sarawak that killed five crew members.
During a Health Select Committee debate, MPs Dr Kelvin Yii and Dr Halimah Ali pressed the Health Ministry over the Flying Doctor Service after a Bo 105 helicopter crashed in Long Lellang, Sarawak, killing pilot Captain Zainol Afiq Bee Sham and four medical staff. Yii highlighted that the aircraft, built in 1991 and retired from production in 2001, was part of Layang-Layang Aerospace’s fleet, which was only suspended two days after the crash, and queried the original contract’s award method, value, and any age restrictions.
He also demanded the latest independent audit of the company’s maintenance records. Halimah called for a comprehensive risk review, questioning whether the number of aircraft and other aviation resources can reliably serve remote areas, and asked for plans on replacement aircraft, evacuation readiness, crew training, and emergency coordination. The five victims were Captain Zainol Afiq Bee Sham, Dr Ainul Baraah Kamaruddin, nurses Debra Moset and Jessie Paya Jok, and medical assistant Alexson Adit Henry.
