MPs push for law ensuring constituency funds are allocated without party bias

Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan urged the government to pass legislation that would allocate constituency funds to all MPs based on a proportional formula, regardless of party affiliation.

In a parliamentary debate on the Supply Bill for the 2027 Budget, Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan appealed for legislation that would secure constituency allocations for all members of parliament, irrespective of their political party. He proposed a proportional formula that accounts for the size of each electorate, arguing that Bangi's large voter base would otherwise receive a lower per-voter share if allocations were equal.

DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo, who also represents Damansara, supported the proposal, suggesting it would eliminate partisan discretion, improve transparency, and fulfill Pakatan Harapan's pledge for equitable development funding. Johan further cautioned the government against reinstating the Goods and Services Tax, noting that more than 900,000 businesses would need to register, far exceeding one outlet 132,000 under the Sales and Services Tax. The call reflects broader concerns about fiscal fairness and tax policy ahead of the upcoming budget.

Why it matters

Ensuring fair funding for all constituencies can reduce partisan bias and improve public trust in government spending.
