Ms. magazine revives “I Had an Abortion” petition amid renewed rights debate

Ms. magazine has relaunched its “I Had an Abortion” petition, inviting women to share their experiences or show solidarity with a check box for supporters.

Ms. magazine, recalling its historic debut issue that listed 53 public personalities such as Billie Jean King and Gloria Steinem who disclosed having abortions before Roe v. Wade, is urging a new wave of participation. The outlet has launched an online petition where women can publicly state “I had an abortion” or, if they have not, tick a box affirming support for their sisters’ choices. This effort seeks to counteract the stigma that often silences women’s voices in the abortion debate, especially as anti-choice protests and violence against clinics increase.

The campaign has already drawn vitriolic reactions from right-wing blogs. In addition to gathering signatures, the petition encourages donations to fund pro-choice initiatives. The move reflects ongoing feminist strategies to destigmatize abortion and rally public backing for reproductive rights.
