Mukesh Khanna calls for Vande Mataram to replace Jana Gana Mana as anthem
Actor Mukesh Khanna reiterated his view that Vande Mataram should become India’s national anthem, arguing that Jana Gana Mana was composed under British rule.
Mukesh Khanna, known for roles in Shaktimaan and Mahabharat, again urged that Vande Mataram replace Jana Gana Mana as India’s anthem, claiming the latter was written during the colonial era and alludes to King George V. He told IANS that the phrase “Jana Gana Mana Adhinayak” points to a ruler deciding India’s destiny, which he finds inappropriate after independence. Khanna argued Vande Mataram embodies devotion to the nation and should be elevated in official ceremonies.
He mentioned a seven-minute personal recording of the song that he hopes will become iconic. The remarks arrive as the government has extended legal protection to Vande Mataram through the 2026 amendment to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Bill. Khanna’s stance joins a broader public debate that includes comments from Sharmila Tagore and Kangana Ranaut on the song’s religious references.
