Multiple unidentified drones fly over Moldova, one crashes and ignites near the border

Several unknown drones were spotted in Moldovan airspace on Saturday morning, and a separate object fell and caught fire close to the frontier.

On Saturday morning, Moldovan border police observed multiple unidentified flying objects over the Căplani region, including two drones traveling toward Olănești-Cistovodnoe and a third crossing from Crocmaz and later exiting near Crutoiarovca. Later, at 5:19, Ukrainian officials informed Moldovan authorities that an object had fallen about 1.5-2 kilometres from the state border in the vicinity of Troițcoe, resulting in a fire.

A patrol was dispatched to the site and investigations are underway to determine the cause and recover any fragments. Separately, the Ministry of one outlet reported finding components near Colonița that resemble a turbo-propelled unmanned aerial vehicle, condemning the incident as a spillover of the Russian aggression against Ukraine. The ministry emphasized that any unauthorized entry into Moldovan airspace breaches the nation’s sovereignty.

Why it matters

The incursions highlight Moldova's vulnerability to spillover from the Russia-Ukraine conflict and raise security concerns.
