Munich prepares for possible 2036 Olympic bid after DOSB selection

At a meeting in Baden-Baden, the German Olympic Sports Confederation selected Munich as the German candidate to approach the International Olympic Committee for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Summer Games. Mayor Dominik Krause urged the city to start preparations immediately, proposing the creation of an organizing committee to develop the bid. Sport coordinator Michael Asbeck, who led the two-year bid concept, noted the uncertainty of the IOC's exact requirements, which hampers early structuring.

The IOC president Kirsty Coventry announced a revised selection process, with a strategic dialogue slated for early 2027 for the 2036 Games. Munich officials stressed the urgency of infrastructure work, such as a new Olympic village and transport links, and called for an "Olympic law" to streamline approvals across federal, state and municipal levels. Krause cited a ten-billion-euro budget, with half expected to be recouped through commercial revenues, and said Bavaria and the federal government would discuss their financial contributions. The city also plans to leverage upcoming events, like the men's handball world championship, to showcase its capabilities.
