Munitions truck overturns on Granada highway, prompting road closure and evacuations
A truck carrying mortar shells and other explosives spilled its load on the A-4002 near El Fargue, Granada, forcing the road to be shut and nearby residents evacuated.
On Tuesday afternoon a lorry loaded with mortar grenades and other explosives from the Fábrica de Municiones de Granada lost part of its cargo on the A-4002 near the El Fargue district. An internal shift in the load ripped open the truck’s side, scattering shells across the road and prompting the Guardia Civil to order residents within 100 metres to evacuate. Specialized TEDAX bomb-disposal teams, together with national and local police and fire services, were dispatched and the region’s emergency plan for dangerous-goods incidents was activated.
Authorities reported no injuries and cleared the ordnance, allowing traffic to reopen later that day. The company, owned by Slovak MSM Group of the Czech Czechoslovak Group, confirmed the movement was a short internal transfer and launched an internal probe, suggesting the cargo had not been properly secured. The incident highlights concerns over the transport of military-grade ammunition through populated areas in southern Spain.
