Murder of former MP Raj Grewal's staffer investigated amid fraud lawsuits

In a case that has resurfaced amid a wave of lawsuits alleging fraud by former Liberal MP and lawyer Raj Grewal and his firm RSG Law, police are examining the 2023 murder of employee Jaskarn Dhaliwal, who was ambushed outside Brampton's Shoppers World mall. Three men in their 20s—two from Brampton and one from Toronto—have been charged, and authorities describe the attack as isolated with no known motive. Separate incidents include gunfire directed at Grewal's Toronto-area residence in 2023 and a more recent, uninjured targeting, which Grewal's counsel says are unrelated to the civil claims.

The lawsuits, supported by the Law Society of Ontario, allege mortgage fraud, misappropriation of client trust funds, and false title insurance, prompting a request to suspend Grewal's practising licence. Grewal resigned his Brampton East seat in 2018 after revealing millions in gambling debts and was later acquitted of related RCMP charges. Lawyers for both sides caution against conflating the homicide with the legal disputes, emphasizing that the perpetrators are awaiting trial.
