Musk urges Cursor staff to accelerate SpaceXAI after $60 billion takeover
After SpaceX closed a $60 billion purchase of AI coding firm Cursor, Elon Musk told its 1,000-plus engineers that the SpaceX AI unit is lagging and must catch up.
SpaceX finalized a $60 billion purchase of the AI coding startup Cursor, prompting Elon Musk to address more than a thousand employees in a company-wide video meeting. Musk bluntly stated that SpaceX’s AI division is trailing competitors, specifically naming Anthropic as the current leader, and urged the team to help close the gap quickly. He argued that advanced AI models could eventually outpace human control, making early development crucial.
The acquisition, which followed a prior tech-sharing and compute agreement, also altered the organizational chart: Cursor CEO Michael Truell now reports directly to Musk within SpaceXAI, while co-founder Aman Sanger moves to pretraining and Sualeh Asif becomes director of machine learning. Slack channels have merged, staff are being encouraged to relocate to Palo Alto, and Truell offered copies of a SpaceX history book.
Although Cursor posted $4 billion in revenue, 45 employees have departed since April, including many from recent hires. SpaceXAI and Cursor declined to comment on the changes.
