Muslim divorce filings surge nationwide, Selangor leads with most cases

Syariah courts recorded a sharp rise in Muslim divorce applications across Malaysia, with Selangor reporting the highest volume.

The Syariah Department reported a notable uptick in Muslim divorce applications nationwide during the first nine months of the year, with a large share still under consideration. Selangor recorded the greatest number of cases, while Johor and Kedah followed. Senior director Abu Suffian Abu Yaziz explained that resolved cases include mutual consent divorces, trial judgments and court-ordered dissolutions, yet some applications may be rejected if they lack sufficient grounds under syarak.

Archived files represent withdrawn or unattended matters. Authorities attribute many separations to insufficient understanding of domestic responsibilities, financial strain, and communication failures, despite couples attending pre-marriage courses. The courts prioritize reconciliation efforts before issuing a talak pronouncement, and ancillary issues such as maintenance and child support are addressed alongside the divorce process.

Why it matters

Rising divorce filings highlight social and economic pressures affecting Malaysian Muslim families.
