Myanmar Starts Rotational Power Cuts to Meet Rising Dry-Season Electricity Demand
Myanmar has begun rotating electricity supply to match consumption with limited generation as temperatures climb ahead of the dry season.
Facing a surge in electricity consumption due to hotter weather and the retreat of the monsoon, Myanmar's Ministry of Electricity and Energy launched a rotational power distribution plan on Monday. The scheme will be applied only as far as necessary to keep generation and demand in balance. Authorities cited severe El Niño conditions as the cause of rising temperatures across the country.
They cautioned that a mismatch between supply and demand could force power plants to shut down abruptly or cause faults in the main transmission network, risking a national blackout. The plan is intended to prevent such a system collapse as the dry season approaches.
