Myanmar survivor files war-crimes complaint in Denmark under new universal jurisdiction law
A woman from Chin State now living in Denmark lodged a criminal complaint in Copenhagen accusing Myanmar junta members of war crimes, enabled by Denmark’s 2023 law.
A Chin State resident who escaped to India and later settled in Denmark submitted a criminal complaint in Copenhagen alleging that Myanmar junta officials carried out deliberate killings, large-scale arson and forced displacement of tens of thousands. The filing follows Denmark’s adoption of a law last year that criminalizes war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, granting Danish prosecutors jurisdiction irrespective of the crime’s location or the parties’ nationalities.
Lawyer Eddie Omar Rosenberg Khawaja explained that the legislation enables victims living in Denmark to request investigations of commanders overseeing such atrocities. The case is backed by civil-society groups including Myanmar Action Group Denmark, Chin Community Denmark and the Myanmar Accountability Project. Danish officials have previously highlighted Myanmar’s impunity at the United Nations, and the complaint arrives as Denmark prepares to close its embassy in Myanmar, signaling continued engagement on accountability.
Why it matters
It shows how a new Danish law lets victims of overseas atrocities pursue justice when other avenues are blocked.
