NASA advances lunar autonomy and navigation with rover tests and new relay payload
NASA is conducting ground tests of three compact rovers under its CADRE program, showing that the robots can regroup, reroute and share power information without direct human control. The agency also supplied a NavCube3-mini navigation unit to Intuitive Machines for inclusion in the company’s Altus-1 lunar relay satellite, a payload that can process GPS and Galileo signals to determine spacecraft position far beyond Earth orbit while using under 20 watts of power.
Both efforts are aimed at supporting future missions to the Moon’s South Pole, where permanent shadows and limited sunlight make continuous oversight difficult. The autonomous rover demonstrations and the navigation payload together address key challenges for a sustainable lunar presence.
