NASA and Katalyst Shift LINK Mission to Test Swift Rendezvous After Boost Cancelled

A commercial attitude-control fault has compelled NASA and Katalyst Space to cancel the intended boost of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory by the LINK spacecraft, though the vehicle will still pursue a rendezvous to showcase in-space servicing capabilities. Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency acted swiftly and took calculated risks, while Astrophysics Division director Shawn Domagal-Goldman described the effort as a first-of-its-kind, high-risk mission driven by solar activity.
Swift, a 2004 gamma-ray burst observatory designed for a two-year prime mission, now faces rapid orbital decay and likely atmospheric re-entry later this year. The partnership, initiated with a September 2025 contract, launched LINK on July 3 via a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL from Kwajalein Atoll. NASA and Katalyst will gather data from the upcoming proximity operations to inform future satellite servicing. The agency continues to explore rapid-response options for cosmic events while Swift’s mission concludes.
