NASA astronaut Anil Menon and ESA's Sophie Adenot conduct second ISS spacewalk

Anil Menon and Sophie Adenot performed a second spacewalk on the International Space Station to replace a communications antenna.

On Tuesday, Anil Menon and European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot stepped outside the International Space Station for an EVA that lasted roughly six and a half hours. Their task was to replace the station's space-to-ground antenna, a critical component for high-speed communication with Mission Control in Houston. NASA broadcast the entire walk and later shared a clip showing the crew working on a series of electrical and data connectors.

The mission was Menon's second spacewalk, while it was Adenot's debut, earning her the distinction of being the first French woman to conduct a spacewalk. The operation is part of the ISS's ongoing maintenance as the orbiting laboratory approaches three decades of continuous habitation. The successful antenna swap ensures continued robust data transmission for the aging station.

Why it matters

Replacing the ISS antenna keeps vital communications functional as the station ages.
