NASA chief pitches orbital AI data centers to ease Earth power demands

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman suggested placing AI data centers in Earth orbit to tap solar energy, responding to growing community concerns over terrestrial facilities.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman proposed relocating artificial-intelligence data centers to orbit, citing the potential to harness solar energy as a limitless power source. He presented the notion during a conversation with Nexstar DC’s Vinay Simot, noting that space-based facilities could alleviate the strain that ground-based data hubs place on local grids and resources. Communities across the United States have voiced worries about the high electricity demand, water use, and noise generated by these massive installations, prompting bipartisan legislative efforts to slow their expansion.

President Donald Trump, however, has advocated for swift growth in the sector as part of a broader pro-innovation agenda. The concept aligns with earlier suggestions from Elon Musk and Google’s Suncatcher initiative, as well as Starcloud’s proposal to launch tens of thousands of satellites for orbital computing and even bitcoin mining.
