NASA confirms Orion heat shield performed strongly on Artemis II reentry

NASA officials reported that Orion's heat shield showed far fewer damage sites during Artemis II, confirming its successful performance.

After the Artemis II mission completed a lunar flyby and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, NASA’s safety panel inspected the spacecraft’s ablative heat shield at Ames Research Center. The examination revealed roughly nine char loss locations, a dramatic improvement compared with the more than 100 sites seen on the Artemis I shield in 2022. Panelist Paul Hill called the findings “highly satisfying,” indicating the shield’s design performed as intended despite earlier concerns.

Commander Reid Wiseman and other NASA officials noted the shield appeared in good condition. The positive assessment is expected to bolster confidence in Orion’s readiness for future deep-space and lunar operations.
