NASA Enhances Ames Vertical Motion Simulator with Digital Dome and Modular Cabins
NASA upgraded its large vertical motion simulator at Ames, adding digital technology, a 4K dome and interchangeable cockpit inserts.
NASA’s Ames Research Center has overhauled its vertical motion simulator, the largest worldwide, to meet contemporary mission requirements. The revamp swaps out legacy analog components for modern digital technology and installs a dome fitted with high-resolution 4K projectors, delivering crisp, wide-angle views for pilots. Automated image alignment and color-matching now integrate visuals into the simulated environment in minutes rather than days.
Instead of exchanging an entire heavy cabin, crews can install lighter, modular inserts containing only the necessary controls and panels for each vehicle type, cutting setup time by roughly fifty percent. According to Diana Acosta, head of aerospace simulation R&D at NASA Ames, the enhancements will allow crews to train for more aggressive tasks and improve coordination for upcoming missions. The upgraded platform is expected to accelerate testing of next-generation aircraft and spacecraft, contributing to safer air travel and future lunar and Martian landings.
