NASA launches Orbital Clarity Challenge to fund low-cost thermospheric sensors
NASA’s TechLeap Prize has opened the Orbital Clarity Challenge, seeking affordable ways to measure thermospheric density, pressure or drag on low-Earth-orbit platforms.
NASA announced the Orbital Clarity Challenge as the latest installment of its TechLeap Prize series, targeting the development of low-cost instruments to gauge thermospheric density, pressure, or drag in low-Earth orbit. The effort is a joint initiative of NASA’s Heliophysics Division, the Flight Opportunities program, and the Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation, all focused on improving understanding of space-weather-driven atmospheric expansion.
The competition will proceed through three distinct phases, with registration closing on October 28, 2026 and final submissions due by November 11, 2026. Up to four teams can be selected to receive a share of a $500,000 prize pool and a free flight opportunity as a hosted payload on a commercial spacecraft within twelve months.
