NASA outlines hurdles and prospects for a lunar South Pole outpost

During the NASA Stories at the Ion session on July 30, Shatel Bhakta, principal systems engineer for NASA’s Moon Base Program, explained the agency’s roadmap for a sustained human presence at the lunar South Pole. The strategy involves incremental robotic surveys and technology demonstrations to reduce risk before expanding infrastructure for astronauts. Unique challenges such as rugged craters, shifting shadows that limit solar power, and abrasive regolith that can damage hardware and endanger health were outlined.
Bhakta stressed the need for a distributed habitat layout, robust communications relays, and innovative energy-storage solutions. He also pointed out that permanently shadowed craters may hold water ice, offering in-situ resources for future exploration. The talk underscored the importance of collaboration with commercial, international and academic partners, and positioned the Moon as a proving ground for deeper solar-system missions.
