NASA readies nuclear-powered Dragonfly rotorcraft for Titan exploration mission
NASA is finalizing the Dragonfly spacecraft, a nuclear-powered rotorcraft slated for a July 2028 launch to Saturn’s moon Titan.
Inside a clean-room at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, engineers are attaching eight three-blade rotors, scientific payloads and a compact nuclear power source to the Dragonfly spacecraft. The mission, scheduled for a July 2028 launch, will travel to Titan, where its thick methane atmosphere and liquid hydrocarbon lakes make it a unique target for astrobiology.
Mission architect Ralph Lorenz and principal investigator Elizabeth Turtle, both veterans of the Cassini/Huygens program, lead a team of over a thousand specialists. Over a planned 40-month operation, the rotorcraft will hop across Titan’s surface, searching for geological activity that could connect surface organics with a hidden ocean of liquid water beneath the ice crust.
Why it matters
Dragonfly could reveal whether Titan’s unique chemistry supports any form of life, expanding our understanding of habitable environments.
