NASA releases modernized CEA v3 software for advanced propulsion analysis

NASA’s Engineering and Safety Center has upgraded its long-standing CEA code to a new object-oriented version that works with modern tools like Python and MATLAB.

NASA’s Engineering and Safety Center completed a comprehensive overhaul of the Chemical Equilibrium with Applications (CEA) code, transitioning the 2002 CEA2 Fortran package to a newer CEA v3 built on Fortran 2008 with object-oriented structures. The modern version supports direct calls from Python, C, MATLAB, and Excel, while still accepting legacy command-line inputs. Its thermodynamic library now covers emerging propellants such as ADN, HAN, LMP-103S, and n-Butanol, broadening its relevance for green and sustainable aviation projects.

Although an individual equilibrium calculation takes marginally longer, batch processing of over a hundred thousand cases finishes in about a second, an 800-fold speedup compared with the old code. NASA advises engineers to adopt CEA v3 for new analyses, using the language interfaces for automated workflows, but to retain the classic interface when continuity with older studies is required.
