NASA's 1960 Echo 1A Balloon Demonstrates First Passive Space Communications

On August 12, 1960 NASA launched the 100-foot Echo 1A balloon, the agency’s inaugural communications satellite that reflected telephone, radio and TV signals across the globe.

Exactly sixty-six years ago, NASA sent the 100-foot Echo 1A balloon aloft on a Thor-Delta launch from Cape Canaveral, marking its first successful communications satellite. Constructed from a thin Mylar sheet coated with aluminum, the inflated sphere measured about 30 metres in diameter and served solely as a passive reflector for telephone, radio and television signals. A few hours after launch it reflected a message from President Dwight Eisenhower, transmitting it from California to Bell Labs in New Jersey, and the satellite’s reflective surface could be seen from Earth as it passed overhead.

Beyond communications tests, Echo 1A provided data on atmospheric density, solar pressure and the feasibility of satellite-based triangulation, with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory using large antennas at the Goldstone tracking station for these experiments. The project also enabled amateur radio enthusiasts to bounce signals and contributed hardware that later formed part of NASA’s Deep Space Network. Echo 1A stayed in orbit until it burned up on re-entry on May 24, 1968, paving the way for active communication satellites that followed.
