NASA shifts Mars strategy to helicopter fleet with SkyFall and nuclear propulsion test

NASA has abandoned plans for new Mars landers or rovers, opting instead for the SkyFall helicopter trio that will launch with the SR-1 Freedom nuclear-propulsion mission.

NASA’s upcoming Mars agenda marks a departure from over 30 years of rover and lander missions, turning to a fleet of helicopters as its primary exploration tool. The SkyFall project, comprising three helicopters and a spare, will travel to the Red Planet aboard the Space Reactor-1 “Freedom” spacecraft, which aims to validate nuclear electric propulsion in deep space and carries an estimated price tag of $2.1 billion. The launch window is targeted for as early as late 2028, a rapid timeline for concepts that did not exist six months ago.

AeroVironment, the maker of the Ingenuity helicopter that first flew on another world in 2021, will co-design and manufacture the SkyFall vehicles, which are slightly larger and feature upgraded rotors for heavier scientific payloads. JPL will handle power, avionics, software and a ground-penetrating radar to probe shallow subsurface ice, while the helicopters will also host cameras and atmospheric sensors. The program seeks to prove that Mars helicopters can be produced as a repeatable product line rather than a one-off experiment.
