NASA unveils 16 new X-ray galaxy images in stunning cosmic gallery
NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, together with several other space telescopes, released a collection of 16 new galaxy images showcasing diverse galactic forms.
A new gallery of 16 galactic images has been made public, combining high-energy X-ray data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory with observations from the James Webb, Hubble, IXPE, Neil Gehrels Swift and NuSTAR telescopes, among others. The collection illustrates the three primary galaxy classifications—spiral, elliptical and irregular—each reflecting different formation pathways. Spirals, like the Milky Way, display prominent arms, while ellipticals are older structures likely formed through mergers, and irregulars encompass a wide range of atypical features.
Scientists view these “cosmic gems” as a way to probe the broader history of galaxies and to infer clues about our own galaxy’s past and future. The images draw on data accumulated across Chandra’s long-term mission, offering a multi-wavelength perspective on galactic evolution.
