NASCAR Still Holds 90 Acres of Auto Club Speedway Amid Conflicting Reports

Despite a quitclaim deed circulating online, NASCAR has not sold the remaining 90-acre parcel of the former California Speedway.

A quitclaim deed posted on X led some to believe NASCAR had disposed of the final portion of the former California Speedway site in Fontana. However, motorsports journalist Bob Pockrass explained that the filing concerns a cancelled easement rather than a sale, confirming NASCAR still owns the 90-acre parcel. The organization had already sold 433 acres of the 522-acre complex after the track closed in 2023, keeping the remaining land for a proposed "Next Gen California" short-track project.

That initiative, which envisioned demolishing the 2.0-mile oval and building a high-banked half-mile circuit, was paused in 2025 and has received no updates since. The track hosted 33 Cup Series events over four decades, with Jimmie Johnson holding the most victories and Kyle Busch winning the final race in 2023. No further details on the property's future have been released.

Why it matters

Clarifies that NASCAR still controls a key piece of former track land, affecting future development plans.
