Nation Launches COVID-19 Vaccination Drive Targeting Seniors and High-Risk Groups

The government began a COVID-19 vaccination campaign on Monday, focusing first on people aged 70 and older, residents of infection-vulnerable facilities and immunocompromised individuals aged 12 and up.

On Monday the country rolled out its COVID-19 vaccination programme, integrating the shots into the national essential immunisation schedule for the first time this year. The initial phase targets individuals aged 70+, residents of facilities deemed vulnerable to infection, and people aged 12+ with weakened immune systems. From Thursday, anyone 65 or older becomes eligible, reflecting that over 60% of COVID-19 hospital admissions are among this age group.

Officials recommend that seniors receive the COVID-19 vaccine alongside the seasonal flu shot. Vaccines can be obtained at nearby public health centres or designated medical institutions regardless of residence, provided the recipient presents identification. A single dose will be considered sufficient until June 30 of the following year, although those with compromised immunity may require two doses after medical advice.

Why it matters

The rollout aims to protect the most vulnerable citizens and reduce severe COVID-19 cases and deaths.
