National Party pledges to eliminate blanket car-parking minimum ban in Auckland plan
The National Party announced it will scrap the nationwide ban on minimum car-parking requirements, allowing councils to set parking rules in suburban areas.
National’s transport spokesman Chris Bishop and Auckland spokesman Simon Watts unveiled a new policy package titled “Backing Auckland to succeed.” While the document reiterates previously announced proposals on housing, cost of living and crime, it adds a specific commitment to overturn the existing ban on minimum car-parking requirements. Under the proposed change, local councils could re-introduce parking minimums in suburban districts that are not earmarked for high-density development, including areas around city centres and rapid-transit hubs.
The party claims the move will unclog streets, enhance safety and make suburban neighbourhoods more livable. National leader Christopher Luxon, Bishop and Watts are scheduled to discuss the announcement in Auckland at 8.30 am. The policy aims to give residents the parking they need in appropriate locations while supporting broader urban planning goals.
Why it matters
Changing parking rules could reshape suburban development and traffic flow across Auckland.
