National Weather Service moves to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America

The National Weather Service confirmed that it is in the process of renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, in line with an executive order issued by President Donald Trump. As a Commerce Department entity, the NWS said it will revise online maps, weather forecasts, and related materials promptly. The order, issued during a period of strained trade negotiations with Canada, also previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America and Denali to Mount McKinley.

Social media users have expressed strong opposition, labeling the directive as absurd and politically motivated. Texas Representative Veronica Escobar and others have seized the episode to criticize the president’s priorities. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded in a televised address, highlighting the broader trade dispute.
