Nationwide Drone Blitz Targets Cargo Train Thieves in Coordinated Operation

Federal agents and railroad police launched a synchronized raid across more than two dozen states, using infrared drones to locate and apprehend cargo thieves on trains.

In an unprecedented coordinated sweep, federal, state and local authorities targeted cargo-theft rings operating on freight trains across more than twenty states. Infrared drones provided a "third eye in the sky," detecting heat signatures of thieves climbing onto slow-moving trains or breaking container seals, then relaying live images to ground units. Teams, including the Cook County Sheriff's Police Organized Retail Crime and Cargo Theft Task Force, moved in quietly, sealing exits without lights or sirens, and used the drone footage as undeniable evidence.

The operation highlighted the scale of the problem, with the FBI reporting a 60 % jump in cargo-theft losses to nearly $725 million in 2025, and the Department of Homeland Security estimating annual costs between $15 billion and $35 billion. Illinois, ranking third after California and Texas, saw several arrests, and officials warned that the loss of items ranging from electronics to sneakers could push holiday prices higher.

Why it matters

Cargo theft inflates consumer prices and threatens supply chains, so the new drone tactics aim to curb a costly, growing crime.
