Nationwide housing protests scheduled for October 3-4 after elderly eviction

Coordinated demonstrations against housing policies will take place across Spain on October 3 and 4, sparked by the forced eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen in Madrid.

A wave of housing protests that began earlier this week will culminate in a series of nationwide marches on Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4. The demonstrations are coordinated by the Confederación de Sindicatos de Inquilinas together with several social collectives, responding to the eviction of Maricarmen, an 87-year-old woman forced out of her home after seven decades in Madrid. The rallies follow the recent parliamentary approval of two housing-law decrees, which the union backs but denounces for being divided, requiring both measures to become law for anti-eviction and rent-regulation provisions to take effect.

Over thirty cities have confirmed protest times and routes, and a Thursday cacerolada is scheduled outside town halls to urge parliamentary groups to vote in favour of the measures. The protests will feature marches through central streets, with some locations also honouring Olga, a resident who died after an eviction.

Why it matters

The protests highlight widespread public anger over housing insecurity and could influence the implementation of new tenancy protections.
