Nationwide pause of Crime Stoppers tip lines after breach exposes over 1.5 million submissions

Following a massive data breach that leaked more than 1.5 million anonymous tips, dozens of Crime Stoppers programs and police partners across Canada have halted tip intake.

A cyber-attack on Navigate360, the U.S. firm that processes Crime Stoppers tips, exposed phone numbers, addresses and some names linked to more than 1.5 million submissions across Canada. One outlet’s reporting prompted a wave of suspensions: 11 Crime Stoppers chapters have paused tip intake, while 24 police departments have ended their partnerships pending security reviews. Ontario and Manitoba police services emphasized safeguarding anonymity, and all five Saskatchewan programs announced an immediate halt.

Individual chapters such as Brantford Police Service, Winnipeg Police Service, Near North Crime Stoppers and Sault Ste. Marie Crime Stoppers issued statements confirming the pause. The Canadian Crime Stoppers Association has instructed chapters to direct media inquiries to the national body, and some chapters have added warnings to their websites about the breach.

Why it matters
