Nationwide raids hit over 100 service stations over illegal tobacco and vape sales

In a nationwide effort called Operation Shorthand, more than 100 service stations were raided on Tuesday as part of a coordinated campaign against suspected illegal tobacco and vape sales. The Australian Border Force deployed almost 300 personnel across all states and territories except Tasmania and the Northern Territory, working alongside NSW Police, the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission under the Illicit Tobacco National Disruption Group.

Officers seized imported tobacco packages, cash and other items, with ABF Assistant Commissioner Tony Smith noting criminals are shifting from traditional tobacconists to convenience outlets. One outlet Superintendent Jim Rowe linked the trade to organised crime financing, while NSW Health Minister Ryan Park highlighted the impact on legitimate businesses and community safety. The operation remains active, and some targeted stations could face temporary closures while evidence is assessed.
