Nationwide to eliminate 275 roles as integration of Virgin Money continues

Nationwide building society announced a further reduction of 275 jobs across several support functions as it merges Virgin Money into its operations.

Nationwide building society confirmed another round of job reductions, targeting 275 positions in its retail division and various back-office areas such as HR, finance and communications. The announcement, made to staff on Wednesday, is part of an effort to streamline operations and eliminate overlap after absorbing Virgin Money, a deal valued at £2.9bn. No customer-facing roles are slated for loss, aligning with the society’s commitment to keep its 700 branches open until at least 2030.

This follows a June-announced cut of 600 jobs and brings the combined workforce to about 27,000 employees. Nationwide emphasized that affected staff will receive support, including retraining and redeployment opportunities. The cuts are unrelated to AI adoption, contrasting with Barclays’ AI-driven 5,000-job reduction. The building society will publish its half-year results on 19 November.

Why it matters

The layoffs show how large bank mergers can trigger further job cuts even after the deal is completed.
