NATO chief to outline strategy against Russia as Nobel economics laureate is announced

The NATO Supreme Allied Commander will deliver a rare speech on countering Russia, and the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences will reveal the Nobel economics winner.

In a seldom-heard address, the NATO Supreme Allied Commander will speak at noon about strategies to overcome Russia in a live broadcast. Concurrently, EU foreign ministers will convene to examine rising Russian hybrid threats and consider extending visa limits to Russian diplomats and former combatants, while also reviewing the Middle-East situation. The Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences in Stockholm will announce the laureate of the economics prize, a distinction awarded since 1969 but not created by Alfred Nobel himself.

In The Hague, the Cabaretgala at Theater Diligentia will hand out major Dutch cabaret awards, with nominees such as Rayen Panday, Sarah Janneh and Saman Amini. Additionally, Dutch football coach Arjan Veurink will hold a press conference, and a serious traffic crash on the N233 near Kesteren resulted in two fatalities and two injuries.

Why it matters

The NATO speech signals NATO's stance on Russia, while the Nobel economics award highlights leading economic research.

How the sides frame it

LOW AGREEMENT

Left-leaning coverage frames the economics Nobel as a politically engineered “fake Nobel,” while centrist coverage treats the Nobel announcement as a side note to a NATO strategy briefing, and right-leaning coverage presents the prize neutrally as the “Bank of Sweden Prize in Memory of Alfred Nobel.”

LEFT

The economics prize is portrayed as a politically manufactured “fake Nobel” resulting from a successful political coup.

CENTER

The story is presented as a routine briefing on NATO strategy against Russia, with the Nobel award mentioned only as background information.

RIGHT

The economics prize is described factually as the formally named “Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.”

The left emphasises

  • the prize is a "coup politique"
  • it is a "faux Nobel"
  • understanding this is important for France’s domestic debates

The right emphasises

  • the prize is formally known as the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel
  • the award will be announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
  • last year's winners studied business innovation
