NATO dispatches Spanish fighters after Russian drones trigger alerts in Romania

Russian drones over Ukraine prompted NATO to launch two Spanish F-18s from a Romanian base, leading to temporary air-raid alerts in northern Tulcea County.

In the early hours of Oct. 9-10, Russian drones launched a large-scale assault on Ukraine, prompting NATO to respond with two Spanish F-18 fighter jets stationed at Romania's Mihail Koglniceanu airbase. Romanian radar identified an aerial target about 20 km north of Periprava and a second near Chilia, close to the Danube border. The alliance issued emergency RO-Alert notifications to residents of northern Tulcea County at 12.17 am and again at 2.18 am, each alert lasting roughly an hour.

Romania's Defence Ministry confirmed that no definitive intrusion into its sovereign airspace was recorded, though the proximity of the drones raised concerns. The episode highlights the heightened vulnerability of NATO states adjacent to Ukraine, where repeated Russian strikes have previously produced debris on Romanian territory. NATO has been reinforcing its eastern defenses, and senior commanders have warned that the alliance stands ready to act if a member state is attacked.
