Navy veteran sues Queens spa over severe leg cellulitis infection

A former Navy service member filed a lawsuit in Brooklyn Supreme Court alleging a serious bacterial infection after visiting a Queens spa.

A Brooklyn woman, a Navy veteran honored in the New York State Senate’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame, sued a Queens establishment after contracting cellulitis on her right leg and foot. The lawsuit, filed on Aug. 14 in Brooklyn Supreme Court, accuses the spa of neglecting proper sanitation of its robes, towels, locker rooms, floors and pools, and of not testing hot tubs for safe disinfectant levels. The infection, described as a deep-skin bacterial condition causing itching, swelling and pain, is attributed to the facility’s alleged unsafe practices.

The veteran, also an ordained minister, is pursuing unspecified monetary compensation. The spa, known as Spa Castle, has a history of safety violations, including a temporary shutdown in 2016 after a child nearly drowned and a 2014 death of an elderly patron. Neither the spa nor the city Health Department provided comments to the report.

Why it matters

The case highlights potential health risks at recreational facilities and raises questions about sanitation oversight.
