NBA bans risky player-under bets and other exploitable wagers for upcoming season
The NBA has instructed its sportsbook partners, including DraftKings and FanDuel, to prohibit several player-under and “first-of” bet types after recent gambling scandals.
Ahead of the new season, the NBA sent a directive to its betting affiliates, such as DraftKings and FanDuel, ordering the removal of multiple wager categories that have been exploited in recent fraud cases. Banned bets include player-under parlays, under bets on athletes expected to log fewer than 12 minutes, and “first-of” markets like the opening tip winner or a player’s first shot outcome. The decision was prompted by federal prosecutions of Johntay Porter, who left a game early to boost under bets, and allegations involving Rozier’s brief appearance in a Hornets-Pelicans game.
The league asserts authority over its partners, who handle the vast majority of U.S. sports betting, and adds that it is tightening other prop restrictions from prior seasons. To further protect its community, the NBA has launched a reporting hotline for bettor harassment and hired Charles Tillman to lead educational sessions on betting rules, while partnering with Social Project to help players delete abusive messages.
Why it matters
The ban aims to curb betting fraud and protect players from exploitation and harassment.
